Description: In this paper, new scheme of direct torque control of induction motor for electric vehicles is proposed and the results of an investigation into suitable torque control schemes are also presented. The electric vehicle drive consists of rewound induction motors and a three-level IGBT inverter. The schemes investigated are Field Oriented Control, Direct Torque Control (DTC), and DTC using Space Vector Modulation. The results of Matlab - Simulink simulations and a comparison between the control schemes are presented. It is found that the DTC using Space Vector Modulation scheme is best for this application.

Description: This paper presents a new design of the torque and stator flux estimators for Direct Torque control (DTC) for Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation, which permit very fast calculations. An alternative variable word-size approach in two’s complement fixedpoint format is used for the implementation, in order to minimize calculation errors and the hardware resource usage. The simulation results of DTC model in Matlab, which performed double-precision calculations, are used as references to digital computations executed in FPGA implementation. The Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) method is used to verify the minimal error between Matlab simulation and the experimental results, and thus the well-functionality of the implemented estimators.

Especially in the 1980s, Direct Torque Control (DTC) appeared, with its simple and efficient way to control and further improve the performance of asynchronous motor. However, the existence of traditional DTC will produce torque and torque ripple flux hysteresis width when making steady. Therefore, high-performance control requires a narrower hysteresis width, corresponding demanding inverter switching frequency. Where high power must be low switching losses and good torque control performance is difficult to meet the needs of traditional DTC.

To show the effectiveness of the improved system, simulation results are presented using commercially available software package Matlab/Simulink.
